Ygdrasil, the old tree where the game begins.

About
Branch of Ygdrasil does not exist as a playable game yet, but is so far only a draft script and some graphics hoping to be realized some day.

Game intro
The design for "Branch of Ygdrasil" was created with the basic intention of uniting young kids from all over the world on a virtual playground having the learning of creative communication and social interaction with other players as the key game elements.

Branch of Ygdrasil is a combination of an adventure game and an avatar based chat program for kids.
You have the control of one of multiple characters living in the tree top of the giant tree called Ygdrasil and from this position you explore, socialize, chat, fight and trade your way through the fabulous game world in your search for riches, status and new friends.

The game is focused on bringing together kids in the age of seven to ten of all nationalities in an exiting multiplayer environment based on the internet.
The game will be challenging the individual player on individual terms and do not aim for any forced educational intentions, but is founded on the believing in learning by playing. These visions are reflected in the openness of the game that is ideal to both "chatters" and "gamers".
You do not loose in Branch of Ygdrasil by not collecting any riches or not making any friends, the prize is to be "in" and to have a good time. Drama is sparked by the living tree, in person, positioned at the centre of the game world. From time to time he speaks to his little inhabitants in a friendly voice sending you and your game mates out on various, exiting, tricky and dangerous missions of competitive or cooperative sort with the general task to defend and preserve the small society.

The game scenario is divided into three main sections:
1 - A private section located on the branches that is linked to the individual player and which can be modified by him/her.
2 - A common area placed at the centre of the main trunk where people meet and socialize.
3 - A subterranean hidden location by the tree roots primarily used for games. This area is only accessible to those who participate in the missions and it visually transforms to fit the various kinds of missions, e.g. it can be a dark maze, a racing lane for skateboards, an underwater world.

Private Grounds movie
In this preview some of the features and functionality of the players private area are illustrated.
Build up a house for your character in any style and colour you like then buy and arrange furniture and equipment for it like for a real house.
From the private area you also have to take care about email, pets, your diary and the orchard with the valuable fruits.

Common Grounds movie
The common area, placed at the centre of the main trunk, is where players meet, trade and socialize. In this preview some of the tools for cross linguistic communication and chat are demonstrated. Young players of different nationalities, or without writing skills, can use these creative tools to create meaningful dialogs with other players.

Subterranean Grounds movie
A terrible incident has happened, someone has stolen the magic paintbrush used for painting the leaves in colours of spring and the old tree calls for help. Offered a reward to the one who retrieves the brush players join for the dangerous quest to the underground maze.
Just an example of the many different missions and tasks the players can participate in.

The old tree
The old tree takes the role as a friendly but little confused old Santa- like personality concerned about his children (the players), though most often you have to help the old tree as he call alarm on various threats to him and/or the small society as such. These alarms can be caused by a number of things such as drought (bring water), bug attack (find and defeat the intruders), fire alarm (Locate and put out the fire), missing things (find the magic leaf and return it). Common for all the tasks is that they are concerning all the players equally and favour active players by giving extra points for tasks solved well.

The Shop
This is the place you'd like to go for buying a new dress, an extra floor for your house, a pink sofa or maybe even a new pet. Fruits are used as means for payment.

The Well
The small well at the centre of Ygdrasil is where players collect water for keeping the orchards. Every player grow his/her own kind of fruit and you will have to trade with the other players in order to get the various types of fruit needed for buying goods in the shop.
